The short answer

For a birthday brunch, choose a dress you can sit in comfortably — a midi, a maxi or a mini that isn’t too short — in a light or bright colour, a print, or a breathable fabric like cotton or linen. Save heavy sequins and dark bodycon for the evening unless the brunch runs into the night, and bring a light layer for patios and air conditioning. Every dress here is marked for brunch by our curator.

Dress for daylight

Colour. Yellow, pink, sky blue and white look fresh in sunlight. Deep colours look heavier by day than at night.
Print. A floral or other print hides creases from sitting and the odd drop of coffee.
Fabric. Cotton, linen and matte fabrics breathe. High-shine satin shows every crease by noon.

Dress for the table

Length. A midi or maxi is the easiest to sit in. For a mini, check it in the mirror sitting down.
Detail up top. The table sees your shoulders and neckline: a halter, ruffle, bow or off-shoulder line does the work.
Waist. For a long brunch, skip anything very tight at the waist.

Dress for the room

Patio. Sun, then shade: a light layer, and sunscreen for bare shoulders.
Indoors. Dining rooms run cold. A cardigan or cropped jacket in a neutral goes with most of these.
Winter brunch. A midi or maxi with tights, boots and a coat you are happy to keep on in photos.
Into the night. If plans go on after dark, pick a satin or bright mini and change the shoes, not the dress.
